April, 2015: Madame PainPain is going on hiatus! Woman cannot live on bread alone so she is taking a break to make a different kind of dough.
I thought this was the year I would go into expansion mode and take over the world one Almond Milk & Honey loaf at a time. But it was not to be. One, I am tired. Rising at 3 am three times a week is hard to sustain sometimes. Two, it wasn't making the best financial sense. I was on the verge of exploring investment and business grant options, but then Three happened: an amazing job opportunity. I will be working for the next few months for the Council of Canadians in Ottawa. As we look towards a very critical federal election this fall, I can't think of a better place to be. Thanks to everyone who joined me in this wonderful adventure of Madame PainPain. I'll be back, but for now my last sales day is Saturday, May 2nd, at the Marché Ste Anne. Come say hi and bye! January: It's winter so some things are slowing down - but other things might be taking off. Bread, for instance. Read more about new places to buy Madame PainPain's bread here. November: Let the winter games begin! It was a great summer. A million thanks to everyone who visited the market, tasted my bread, and bought a loaf or two. I can't imagine spending a nicer day than on the water, in the sun, hanging out with all of you. I've decided to do the winter market this year. So we've moved indoors to the St George's church basement on St George street. What a lovely atmosphere. There are about 20 vendors, with more added as the weeks go by. Susan (Zoltan's) and I are teaming up: she's doing the soup, I'm doing the buttered bread. And no, we are not the same person, not sisters, cousins, mother or daughter or significant others. Just neighbours, yo. 6 September: Happy birthday! Time does fly when you're chilling by the water and so the Marché Ste-Anne turns 14 this week. That's fourteen years of tomatoes, tacos and turnip - and thyme & sesame bread. For the occasion all the vendors have been asked to bake a cake! Come by and taste everyone's attempt at birthday goodness. Personally, I'm curious to see what Gord of Gordz Hot Sauce does with a baking pan. 30 August: It's the music, baby. One of the things I love about the Ste Anne's Farmers Market is the live music. From jazz to jug band, the musicians are drawn from a local pool of amazing talent. This week, one of my favourite returns, the Kim Beyea Trio. It's jazzy, soulful, smooth and cool. Kim's got great presence. If you ask me, it all goes well with some Almond Milk & Honey bread! 22 August: It's the Garlic Festival at Marché Ste-Anne tomorrow. I've been calling it the "largest garlic festival in Eastern Canada" but that is not borne out by actual proof. Just something I tell my mother. But it really is an amazing festival. Last year I was not prepared and sold out all my bread before 10:30 am. This year I am going for broke. Come by and see if I'm still awake! 4 August: I just came across this: "Researchers Who Provided Key Evidence for Gluten Sensitivity Have Now Thoroughly Shown It Does Not Exist." I am skeptical of the recent "gluten-sensitive" trend that seems to have taken hold of everyone and their mother (hi Mom). We've been eating wheat-based products, especially bread, for 10,000 years. Surely our systems are able to digest it reasonably well? Not to mention, long-rise sourdough, which is the bread I make, is fermented over such a long period of time (15 to 18 hours) that the gluten protein is already broken down before it even gets to your stomach. So eat, think and be merry! 26 July: BBQ + Blues! It's party time at the Marché Ste-Anne this week. A l'heure du lunch John Latucca vous invite à déguster ses poitrines grillées et côtes levées qui vous mettront l'eau à la bouche. I tasted his BBQ ribs last week and it's out of this world. He's this award winning pitmaster, or something like that. Who knew. 12 July: Orange is the new bread! I have made Orange Blossom Gluten Free bread for Family Day this weekend at the Ste-Anne de Bellevue Farmers Market. Come try it and, if you like it, post bail. In addition to the Ste-Anne de Bellevue Farmers Market this summer, every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm, Madame PainPain will also be available at the wonderful café, Les Artisans d'Hudson (on the corner of Main and Cameron) on Saturdays. Bon Appetit! |
